Summary | Right to Repair legislation has been introduced in prior Congress’ by advocates interested in requiring automakers to hand over proprietary information. They argue that independent repair shops do not have access to the information they need to repair cars and service consumers who do not want to visit dealerships for repairs. The coalition assembled by the aftermarket auto parts stores has also introduced legislation at the state level. However, a coalition has also been formed to oppose this legislation by the automakers, service providers, dealers, and others. The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) opposes legislation that would require automakers to turn over proprietary information when it is already provided to independent service shops via the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASFT) – proposed legislation is a solution in search of a problem.
